It’s funny how there are certain smells, sounds and tastes of childhood that are so comforting even as an adult. For me, this New York style crumb coffee cake is one of those things. It was always a special occasion thing in our house growing up and would be on the table at Easter, Mother’s Day, Christmas or if we had guests for brunch.
This type of cake originated in Germany, I assume brought over to NY with German settlers. If you hear a New Yorker mention “coffee cake”, this is what they are talking about…It doesn’t contain any coffee but it’s a breakfast cake, best savoured with a hot cuppa!
I made one of these delicious cakes on the weekend and we have been eating it over the last few days. I hope, as adults, this recipe will bring my children right back to their childhoods in the way it does for me.
My favourite crumb cake recipe is this one by Smells Like Home. It calls for buttermilk but that’s not something I normally have lying around the house (who does?) so luckily it’s easy make my own! Simply add the juice of half a lemon to the 1/3 cup of milk called for in the recipe and leave it to sit for around ten minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when it takes on a slightly curdled appearance – tada, buttermilk!
I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!
