Seedlip and Palermo alcohol free dirty martini

After nine months of no alcohol during pregnancy and another 12.5 months of minimal alcohol during breastfeeding, I have realised that, although I enjoy a glass of red or a craft beer as much as anyone, I don’t need it. With my dad’s bowel cancer diagnosis, I’m trying to cut down on alcohol, meat and refined sugar. Although I have no intention of becoming completely teetotal, it’s much easier to drink mindfully when there are so many delish new non-alcoholic options! That’s where this guy comes in:

Meet Ben, founder of Seedlip, “the world’s first non-alcoholic spirit”. Ben experimented in his kitchen in the woods using a copper still and a copy of The Art of Distillation to come up with a truly unique drink…and luckily for us, he succeeded! Seedlip Garden 108 is made with peas, hay, spearmint, rosemary and thyme. The classic way of serving this is with tonic and a handful of peas. Sounds weird but looks beautiful and tastes even better.

Seedlip Spice 94 is distilled with allspice, cardamom, oak, lemon, grapefruit and cascarilla and is classically served with tonic and a red grapefruit twist, although I think it’s also pretty great with ginger beer!

And I was absolutely thrilled to find, whilst perusing the Seedlip website this morning, that a new Seedlip has been born…Seedlip Grove 42…and has flavours of bitter orange, blood orange, ginger, lemongrass and lemon. I cannot wait to try it – thanks Ben!

For my virgin dirty martini I use Seedlip Spice 94 and Palermo Bianco, a lightly bitter non alcoholic spirit, that tastes as wonderful neat over ice as it does in cocktails!

It feels wrong to call this dirty martini a ‘soft drink’ as it’s anything but soft! It somehow embodies all the flavours a dirty martini should have – salty with a hint of sweetness from the vermouth – without the alcohol. Perfect for those nights where you want something a little special without feeling it the next day. As a bonus it contains very little sugar and almost no calories!

Dirty Martini

Serves: 1


2 shots Seedlip Spice

• 1 shot Palermo Bianco alcohol free vermouth

• 1 tbsp olive brine (or to taste)

• 2 olives on a cocktail stick


Combine the first three ingredients along with a generous handful of ice in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Pour into a martini glass and add the cocktail stick and olives as garnish. Cheers!
